Analytical Writing Assessment
(AWA) for GMAT

GMAT AWA
The GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section comprises two analytical writing tasks:
  • Analysis of an Issue (30-minute task); and
  • Analysis of an Argument (30-minute task).
The 'Issue' topic states an opinion / view on an issue of general interest. Your task is to write an effective, well-reasoned essay that discusses the issue from any perspective(s) you desire. To support your viewpoint and explain your ideas, you should provide relevant reasons and examples.

The second writing task requires you to critique an argument in terms of its logical soundness. Rather than agree or disagree with the given topic, you should discuss how well-reasoned the argument is.

The two tasks complement each other. The 'Issue' task requires you assume a position, provide evidence to support your viewpoint, and build an argument of your own. On the other hand, the 'Argument' task demands that you evaluate somebody else's argument, examine the evidence provided to you, and develop a critique of your own.
