How to Find the Value of Algebraic Expressions ?

Evaluation of an algebraic expression involves finding its numerical value by substituting the various letter variables with specific values. This is done by rewriting the expression after replacing the letter variables by the given numbers. It is important to write each replaced number in parentheses. Then, evaluate the expression carrying out the operations in the correct order (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction).

Example :
Given a = 2, b = −3, and c = 0.5, evaluate c(a − 4b) + 5a3b
Now, c(a − 4b) + 5a3b
= (0.5) ((2)− 4(−3)) + 5(2)3(−3)
[on substituting a everywhere by (2), b everywhere by (−3), and c by (0.5)]
= (0.5) (2 +12) + 5(8)(−3) = 7 + (−120) = −113
